Case study insights - Stena Drilling

SRO work with Stena Drilling to install Maximo Asset Management System

Stena Drilling, one of the world’s leading independent drilling contractors, has a new, robust, risk-free and future-proof Maximo 7.6.1 EAM software to support their business and assets.

SRO Solutions was chosen to replace previous asset management software with IBM's Maximo 7.6.1 system and SRO's data replication tool (SDR). The new system was implemented on time and to budget by a team of six engineers from SRO who also delivered training on the fleet in the Canary Islands, Israel, Guyana and Scapa Flow in Scotland.

“Now Maximo aided by SDR enables proactive equipment maintenance preventing expensive and disruptive breakdowns while procurement can plan with greater efficiency, understanding what spares can be shared between ships saving unnecessary purchases." says SRO operations director Andrew Carrie

The challenge

Stena Drilling's incumbent EAM system was struggling to keep their four drillships and two semi-submersibles dispersed across the globe in-sync with its Aberdeen HQ. This included 7500 unique pieces of equipment on each vessel and 1.2million historical work orders.

The incumbent system was a niche solution, with limited support and finite lifespan. The primary objective was to remove this risk by replacing it with a well-supported system with a public roadmap. Any ‘quick wins’ identified would be implemented, but ultimately key aim was to replace the existing system ‘like for like’ with no break in business continuity.

IBM's Maximo 7.6.1

After reviewing the available EAM solutions Stena Drilling decided to invest in IBM's Maximo 7.6.1 Oil and Gas industry solution, that is a well-supported system with a public roadmap.

Maximo enables proactive equipment maintenance preventing expensive and disruptive breakdowns while procurement can plan with greater efficiency, understanding what spares can be shared between ships saving unnecessary purchases.

Benefits

  • Significant cost savings due to the streamlined purchasing process and ability to operate with live foreign exchange rates.
  • Digital integration of Maximo with new IT systems and other software for the ease of use of the system.
  • Data insights

SRO Data Replication

SRO Solution's own data replication engine (SDR) is designed specifically for the maritime and offshore industry and automatically syncs all the Maximo data when the vessels are at sea.

Remote Maximo instances can obtain the same quality of service that connected sites, irrespective of high latency or low bandwidth restrictions. Data Replication sessions are recovered from failure and prevent the need for manual intervention. Data is delivered in the way you have instructed it to be, based on the rules which are predetermined by technical consultants within your business.

Benefits

  • SDR ensured all data across the vessels and HQ is replicated quickly and with minimal interference and no manual intervention.
  • Built-in collision -handling and intelligent session recovery provide full flexibility.
  • Stena team can configure fragments of data to reduce the replication bandwidth while still receiving their pertinent data.
"Maximo itself only works online but through our system, we can sync data on a planned schedule offline reducing overload on bandwidth when Maximo gets back online.”
Andrew Carrie

Agile DSDM project Management

The flexibility of SRO's Agile framework had a significant impact on the project ensuring it was delivered on time, on budget and responsive to Stena needs.

The System was developed using the Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM) under the Agile framework over the course of 8 timeboxes consisting of 3 weeks each. SRO was on site for at least one day of each timebox at Stena Offices to facilitate client involvement in the solution. The Workshops identified the 5 major workstreams:

  • Work Management
  • Asset Management
  • Procurement
  • Logistics
  • Finance

The SRO team spent 9 days conducting on-site workshops primarily to build the Prioritised Requirements List (PRL) by rating requirement according to MoSCoW methodology (Must have, Should have, Could have, Won’t Have at this time) and also to analyse and consult on the current business processes and perform high-level data mapping.

SRO has built a true partnership with Stena by ensuring that the client was actively involved and had better control over the whole process.

Maximo Training

Just enough - just in time approach!

This pragmatic training approach, true to the Agile DSDM methodology, meant that SRO delivered the training sessions onboard the vessels prior to and during the vessel go-lives.

This hands-on Maximo training was provided by fully certified SRO Maximo consultants with years of offshore experience which enabled the training sessions to be conducted onboard the vessels delivering 1,000 hours of training and support to personnel on board the 6 Stena vessels ensuring Stena had training and support both onshore and offshore during the vessel Go Lives.

To ensure a smooth transition to the new EAM system second visits were conducted to allow to train the crew on leave during initial go-live training and to answer any user queries.

Fun Statistics

Showing a sincere commitment to training and always responding to the customer's needs took SRO trainers on a full lap around the world (24,706 miles travelled).

The result

With the IBM' Maximo 7.6.1. and SRO data replication solution in place, Stena Drilling has a state-of-the-art Asset Management system that empowers the organisation to monitor its assets worldwide and benefit from the data insights Maximo offers.

  • Implementation of Maximo has ensured a single point of data - the system integrations to 3rd party applications were configured as well as the setup of the replication network.

  • Instant information - Seamless data replication (SDR) keep the HQ and vessels updated giving a full overview of all assets.

  • Improved workflow and inventory management ensure that the right parts are used for the right job.

  • Higher visibility of performance and compliance across the whole organization.

Maximo In a (Dis)Connected World: How Stena Drilling Delivered IBM Maximo

Watch the Maximo World 2020 reflection session of how the Stena Drilling Ltd. project has been implemented. Martin Eklund, Asset Performance Superintendent at Stena Drilling and Andrew Carrie, Operation Director at SRO Solutions discuss Maximo project intricacies.

In this 59 minutes video you will learn :

  1. How to deliver complex Maximo projects on time and on budget.
  2. How to enable Maximo in poorly connected environments with replication tool SDR.
  3. How IBM Maximo Oil and Gas was configured to meet the unique needs like manifesting, meter reading, label printing, application for expenditure and budgeting working on a global scale.

"This was a very demanding, sensitive project which drew on all SRO’s expertise to ensure a smooth transition of data systems, from each ship and the headquarters to the single Maximo platform"

Andrew Carrie, Operations Director, SRO

"Now Maximo enables proactive equipment maintenance preventing expensive and disruptive breakdowns while procurement can plan with greater efficiency, understanding what spares can be shared between ships saving unnecessary purchases."
